Why We Use Local Produce

Over recent years there has been a rise in the demand for locally sourced produce and goods. It’s fantastic that people are becoming more and more conscious about where their food comes from and how it affects the environment around them. Here at Catering Yorkshire, we’re proud to say that we’ve been using locally-sourced Yorkshire goods and produce for years now – ever since Martin established the business in 2008.

Martin was born and bred in Yorkshire, so it’s in his nature to make the most of the amazing Yorkshire farming to source fresh veg and meat. In fact, there’s not a lot that Martin and the team enjoy more than spending time at the markets searching for gorgeous and fresh Yorkshire food! But what exactly is it that we think so great about using local produce? Let’s take a look.

Fresh And Delicious!

Nothing is better than fresh! The fact is that locally-sourced ingredients are always going to be fresher. Basically, they just have less distance to travel between the field to your fork. Imported produce has to be preserved while being transported by plane, train or ship. Local produce can reach the kitchen in a much shorter space of time and doesn’t need as much preservation.

This has an impact on the flavour of the foods, but we also love the fact that local produce reaches your plate looking fresh, vibrant and colourful! Here at Catering Yorkshire, we’re all about providing the full package – we want our food to look almost as good as it tastes!

Promoting the use of locally-grown food is also important to the team at Catering Yorkshire because we know that it’s kinder to the environment. There are a few different reasons for this, including the fact that it promotes accountability for more sustainable food. When you eat local you understand better where it came from and who produced it. This gives local farmers great encouragement to move towards better, more organic practices.

It’s also true that local food uses less energy for harvesting and fewer chemicals are often used on crops as a result of better accountability. As we said above, food from local farms also travels a much smaller distance, reducing the food miles and fuel consumption involved in bringing you a delicious meal.

It Supports The Local Community

Want to keep more money in your local community? Well, the use of local food certainly helps this. When you make a decision to spend your hard-earned money on food from local growers, you’re feeding back into your own community. Local farmers also keep more profit because they don’t need to spend as much on transportation or distribution. Using local and organic food helps local farms and businesses thrive!

Of course, the more business smaller local farms get, the more jobs there are available as well. By paying back into your community by choosing local produce, you may very well be helping to provide more local jobs as well. Sustainable food and sustainable employment – what could be better?
